\u201cYour shoelaces are trailing on the ground,\u201d my father\nsaid to me yesterday as we were strolling around the garden. \u201cYes,\u201d I replied. \u201cYou\nlook ridiculous,\u201d he said. \u201cAh well,\u201d I answered. \u201cYou might trip over them,\u201d\nhe said. \u201cI might do many things…\u201d I pondered. He carried on nagging for a\nlong time, before finally concluding, \u201cGiving children advice is a good way of\nmaking sure they won\u2019t do what you want them to do \u2013 in fact they\u2019ll generally\ndo the opposite. My mother would often remind me that my favourite TV show was\non soon. I knew that it would start before long and I wanted to watch it, but\nmy mother\u2019s reminders annoyed me so much that I didn\u2019t watch it at all. My father\nrarely gave us advice.
