The\nstory \u201cYou\u2019ll Manage It\u201d can be used to counteract negative suggestions which\nmay be self-fulfilling, and to build positive expectations.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 19 June 1964, Martin\u2019s class teacher was\nwriting reports. In Martin\u2019s report she wrote, \u201cMartin\u2019s achievements are\nentirely satisfactory, but he would achieve much more if he did not suffer from\nsuch severe behavioural problems. He is tense and unfocused, has no\nself-confidence and often appears to be terrified. He must find a more orderly\nway of working.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 16 June 2008, Martin was talking to eight\nchildren in a psychiatric outpatients\u2019 clinic. \u201cWhen I was your age,\u201d he said, \u201cI\nhad hardly any friends. The other children teased me and laughed at me. The\nteacher wrote in my report, \u2018He will fail because of his inability to apply\nhimself and to behave himself.\u2019 She was wrong \u2013 I made a success out of my\nlife.
